Idowu Raises the Alarm on Decline of Grassroots Football

first_imgFollowing the non-qualification of Nigerian teams for the age-grade competitions within and outside Africa,Chairman of Nath Boys FC, Yemi Idowu, has urged the leadership of state Football Associations (FAs) to revive grassroots soccer to aid the development of the game at that level.Idowu, a director on the board of the Lagos Junior League believes there must be conscious efforts by those in charge of football to give adequate attention to youth football to ensure that quality players graduate to the senior national teams in future. He admitted that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has done a good job so far with the senior national teams but that the states need to meet up with their obligations at that grassroots level.“After we won the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup, we had players from the tournament coming through to the senior national teams and we were all excited about the team’s qualification for the World Cup. But we must not relax and believing that all is well,” he stressed.Idowu, a former chairman of the National Academicals Sports Committee (NASCOM) charged the football body to start building junior teams despite the country’s inability to make it to age grade CAF and FIFA competitions this year.“We don’t have to be relaxed hoping that we will assemble teams when we have competitions but we must start building now so that some of these players can make the senior national teams in three to five years time. If we don’t do this, this is another disaster waiting to happen,” he warned. For the Lagos Junior League, Idowu lamented the delay in commencing the competition, adding that the league has become a good platform to discover quality players for the national teams. With likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Dele Alampasu and Wilfred Ndidi coming through the league, Idowu believes when the Lagos Junior League kicks off, more players would be unearthed for the country.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more

HBF survey highlights areas for improvement in the industry

first_imgShare Richard FitzGerald steps down as RMG CEO August 6, 2020 StumbleUpon Irish racing gets green light to resume in June May 15, 2020 Related Articles Submit A Horseracing Bettors Forum (HBF) survey published earlier this week has identified a number of factors which set out the ways the horseracing industry and associated betting activities can be improved. The survey, which received 1024 responses, was created to gain a cross-sectional view of the racing industry from bettors with the hope of using the survey to prioritise future improvements. It addressed a variety of aspects of wagering in the UK horseracing industry and invitations to respond were sent to racing groups on facebook, via racing websites, through twitter and via theRacing UK email newsletter. The report detailed: “The survey asked a range of questions designed to assist HBF in prioritising its future activities. A number of questions gave respondents the opportunity to provide their own views on how racing could be made more attractive as well as what additional information should be made available. ”The age demographics and gender of bettors were among one of the criteria highlighted by the HBF. Of the 1024 responses, only 5% of respondents were aged 18-25 whereas 27% were aged 61-80.Meanwhile 94% of respondents were male, 5% female and 1% preferred not to share their gender. These results, according to the HBF, “could be seen to underline the need to educate and engage younger bettors about horseracing and its associated intricacies.”The survey results also highlighted that bettors were frustrated with the restrictions placed on betting accounts without receiving prior notice – while others called for the introduction of a minimum bet liability. 814 of the respondents left comments in the survey regarding the ways in which the racing experience can be enhanced – including suggestions to promote in-running betting, enhanced data availability and a minimum bet guarantee. The survey suggested that in-running betting was increasing in popularity, with 48 per cent of respondents having placed a bet in running during the last 12 months. Meanwhile 33 per cent said they would bet in running if race streaming was improved, and another 29 per cent would consider it.Responses also highlighted that receiving race data from print media has fallen, with 93 per cent of respondents obtaining horse racing information through websites; while 74 per cent have used publications such as the Racing Post to gain information “at least some of the time.” Footstock signs Chris Kamara as new brand ambassador August 18, 2020 Sharelast_img read more

Barren spell continues for Ramgeet as lead dwindles

first_imgPHOENIX, Arizona, (CMC): Andrew Ramgeet’s lead in the Turf Paradise jockeys standings continued to shrink steadily after the Jamaican could only log a single win on Wednesday’s eight-race card. The victory – his first in four race days – left Ramgeet just four clear of main rival Scott Stevens on 81 wins for the campaign which still has seven weeks to run. David Lopez and Jorge Bourdieu both lie third on 67 wins. Only last month, a rich vein of form saw Ramgeet open up a healthy lead but the subsequent dry spell has now tossed the championship race wide open again. WINLESS DAY He appeared set for another winless day on Wednesday before he found the enclosure in the last of his three rides in race seven, steering favourite Entitled Star to a handsome victory over the four-year-old and upward fillies and mares in race seven. Going 71/2 furlongs, Ramgeet trailed in fourth through the opening quarter as Wild Derby Daze, ridden by his son Andre Ramgeet, made the early running. Ramgeet Sr roused the four-year-old bay filly exiting the backstretch, grabbed the lead on the far turn and steadily drew off to reach the wire 31/4 lengths clear. Luck went against Ramgeet in another 71/2 furlong trip in race four as he missed out by a neck with favourite Dynamic Scoring to eventual winner Dreamcatcher.last_img read more
