Ranking the Big 12 Coaching Jobs

first_imgIt’s hiring season — known in Athens and Lincoln as “find us somebody who’ll average more than nine wins a year” season — which means we need to rank the Big 12 coaching jobs. From most desirable to least. Here we go.1. OklahomaOU is basically Texas minus all the crap that goes along with being Texas (see below).2. BaylorNew facilities. Most recent Heisman winner. A brand that resonates with kids. A stone’s throw from multiple recruiting hotbeds. Zero accountability from local media so you can do whatever you want there including harboring a rapist without getting any questions from anyone. Who wouldn’t want to coach at Baylor?3. Oklahoma StateI’m not sure even Gundy knows how easy he has it. The cash flows. The facilities rock. The spotlight shines brighter down south (and it doesn’t even shine that bright there). Win 7-9 a year, throw in a 10-win season every once in a while, and you’re good to go.4. TCUHey, don’t take it from me. Sonny Cumbie would rather coach at TCU than at Texas. That’s pretty hilarious, by the way. Come save our offense in Austin. Nah, I’m good here at Texas Christian! Texas Christian!5. TexasI keep being told Texas is one of the three best jobs in the country, if not the best. That’s just not true. It’s not even one of the three best jobs in the Big 12. Between the administrative mess, the Longhorn Network obligations and the fact that Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU, Houston and Oklahoma State (not to mention A&M and OU!) can come in and swipe all your recruits. It’s certainly not what it used to be.6. Texas TechI wanted to put Tech ahead of Texas but I just couldn’t.7. West VirginiaIt’s still weird and stupid that WVU is in the Big 12.  It feels like that’s at least a decent job because you’re not recruiting all the same dudes as the rest of the schools. I can’t put it in the top half though.8. Iowa StateCarson, Quade, Amilian and I had a conversation over the weekend about whether Nebraska would ever be elite again. The consensus was no because of location. Iowa State is Nebraska lite (including the irrational fan support — and I mean that as a good thing).9. Kansas StateHere are all the non-wizards who have had success in Manhattan: 10.
