Joshua Aims for First World Title

first_imgTweetPinShare0 Shares LONDON, ENGLAND – Rising heavyweight phenom Anthony Joshua finally gets his chance to fight for a world title, facing IBF titleholder Charles Martin on April 9 in Joshua’s native England (Martin is from Missouri).Martin won the IBF title, which was vacant because champion Tyson Fury refused to fight the organization’s top contender, Vyacheslav Glazkov, instead opting to give Wladimir Klitschko a rematch after having beaten him last year for the lineal heavyweight championship (as well as the belts of various other “alphabet soup” organizations).Martin, 23-0-1,  beat Glazkov for the IBF crown.Joshua has had a short but spectacular career to this point, knocking out all 15 of his opponents in 7 rounds or fewer. At 6’5 with an 82-inch reach, Joshua has a slight advantage over the 6’5 80-inch reach Martin. An interesting component will be how the orthodox-stanced Joshua will fare against the southpaw Martin.Though Joshua is the oddsmakers’ favorite, some think he took the Martin fight too soon, because though he is a tremendous talent with a great combination of speed and power, Martin may be a bit too experienced for Joshua at this early stage of his career.last_img
