Monaco captain not surprised by Anthony Martial’s start for Manchester United

first_imgAnthony Martial has made a remarkable start to life in the Barclays Premier League, but neither Monaco captain Jeremy Toulalan nor manager Leonardo Jardim have been surprised by the Manchester United striker’s early success. Louis van Gaal’s United forked out an eye-watering amount at the end of the transfer window to coax the 19-year-old from the principality. Monaco could end up receiving as much as £58million for the striker, but becoming the most expensive teenager of all time appears to have added little pressure on Martial. A remarkable solo debut effort against Liverpool has been followed up by several more impressive displays, taking his tally to four goals in six matches. Martial’s immediate success has shocked many onlookers, but not his former captain at Monaco. “No, it is not a surprise for me,” Toulalan said when asked by Press Association Sport. “Anthony has got a lot of qualities. “He is a good man and he will have a lot of success in Manchester. “For Anthony, to be honest, it was difficult to refuse an offer like this. I am happy for him, he plays well at Manchester United.” Martial moved to the principality from Lyon in 2013, making 70 appearances and scoring 15 goals for Monaco before heading to Old Trafford. Jardim, like Toulalan, completely understood the striker’s desire to move on and has not been surprised by the way he has begun life at United. “Anthony is a young, very good player,” the Monaco boss said on the eve of the Europa League tie with Tottenham. “Last year he played bad in the beginning of the season and after worked a lot physically and mentally. “When you work in a club like Monaco with good methods and a good team, it is easy to improve and to go to a big European club.” center_img Press Associationlast_img
