Austin. FRISCO, Texas – Lamar’s Nick Garth is the Southland Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league announced Monday. The Cardinals (19-11, 11-6 SLC) picked up two road wins this past week to clinch their spot in the 2018 Southland Conference Basketball Tournament in Katy, Texas, on March 7-11. LU opened the week with an 87-73 victory over Houston Baptist (6-23, 2-14 SLC) on Wednesday to earn its second win against the Huskies this season. Garth and his squad then claimed their second win against Stephen F. Austin (23-6, 12-4 SLC) this season, defeating the Lumberjacks 71-66 on Saturday. LU wraps up its season Saturday in Lake Charles with a 3:30 p.m. CT contest against rival McNeese. Coming off the bench in both games for Lamar, Garth averaged 22.5 points per game to lead the Cardinals to a 2-0 week. Garth began the week knocking down four triples and going a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line against Houston Baptist en route to dropping 22 points. He then scored 23 points Saturday at Stephen F. Austin to give the Lumberjacks their first loss at home this season. The junior guard from Houston shot 8-of-17 from the field and drained six three-pointers to provide Lamar with its first season sweep over SFA since the 2001-02 season. Garth also won the award Jan. 22. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
